This moment’s for me

It’s been that kind of a week.

You know the kind I mean- non-stop raining, a sick toddler whose tantrums and snot have reached epic proportions, and a baby whose swollen gums are showing signs of two front teeth pushing through. Fun times!

Weeks like this have me wanting to escape from the present moment, not be present in it! (Mindfulness momma faux pas).

Enter the sourdough pancake.

Because all this crazy is nothing that a latte-in-a-bowl and a sourdough pancake, slathered in melted butter and syrup, can’t cure!

A while back my mom gifted me a 30-year-old sourdough starter. Growing up we used it to make special sourdough rolls and biscuits at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I looked forward to them every year. Then I started wondering- why stop there? Why only use my starter on special occasions?

I still laugh when a waiter asks me what I’m celebrating as he pours a glass of pink bubbly champagne for me. “Life!” I respond with gusto. Don’t save the good stuff for special occasions enjoy it now! So I thought, what else can I do with this amazing sourdough starter stuff?

Turns out…pancakes. Or, as my husband calls them, “The best pancakes I’ve had in my life!”

I mean, why wait until Sunday for a brunch that’s café worthy? Friday seems as good a day as any. I can just imagine myself sipping my latte-in-a-bowl at some Parisian sidewalk café- instead of while sitting in my breakfast room in my faux French bistro chair with my dirty mom bun.

Now, I’m not going to tweak say one ingredient from this recipe and call it “adapted from.” I’m going to give it to you straight up- I got my recipe here. She’s either a genius or the person she got it from is.

If you don’t have sourdough starter, or know what the hell it is, google “sourdough starter recipe.” Instructions abound online. We won’t go into that here.

As a mom -I won’t say SAHM mom because you work-outside-the-home moms (my sister) are freakin hero’s too and that shit ain’t any easier- some days, or weeks, are more trying than others.

So please, be kind to yourself. Offer yourself little blissful breaks when you can- like a breakfast Shavasana- for 15 minutes or so each day. Your mommy sanity will thank you. As the saying goes- take care of yourself so that you can take care of those who need you.

So, while my kids sit silently wolfing down pancake awesomeness, I sit silently sipping my latte-in-a-bowl (yes, they are better in a bowl!) just breathing in this moment. After that? Well, all hell might break loose again. But hey, it’s a hell of a way to start the day!

From my heart to yours,
